UV is the primary degradation mechanism
In a humid climate, moisture ends most coatings. In the Mojave, sunlight does. Aromatic epoxy exposed to Las Vegas UV ambers within a season and chalks into a dull powder within two or three. There is no product-quality workaround: the chemistry either has aromatic rings for UV to break or it does not.
Everything exposed to daylight here must be aliphatic: polyaspartic or aliphatic urethane. That includes the front strip of a garage floor that sees sun through an open door most afternoons.
Surface temperature and barefoot comfort
Dark coatings on a Las Vegas patio or pool deck can reach surface temperatures that are genuinely unsafe for bare feet. Light colors, textured finishes, and reflective flake blends run substantially cooler. This is the single most common regret we hear about desert exterior slabs finished in dark metallic.
Caliche and drainage
Southern Nevada's caliche hardpan does not expand like clay, so slab movement is less of an issue than in Texas. What it does do is impede drainage, which means irrigation and monsoon runoff can pool against foundations and create localized moisture where you would not expect it in a desert.

Monsoon season and scheduling
